Schema markup for AI search in Bangalore: which structured data an AI answer can read
Schema markup helps you get cited by Google's AI Overviews, and it helps far less with ChatGPT and Perplexity than most agencies in Bangalore will tell you. Google parses your JSON-LD as data and uses it to decide what your page is about. The chat assistants read the same block as plain text inside your HTML, so it counts only when the facts in it are also stated in your visible copy. Schema is worth adding, in a specific order.
Does schema markup get you into AI answers?
It improves your odds on Google and removes ambiguity everywhere else. Analyses published through early 2026 put structured data on roughly two thirds of the pages Google's AI mode cites and around seven in ten of the pages ChatGPT cites, which says those pages tend to be well built rather than that the markup caused the citation. A controlled test in February 2026 found that ChatGPT and Perplexity tokenise JSON-LD as raw text rather than parsing it as a structured record.
That distinction matters when a small Bangalore business is deciding where an afternoon of developer time goes. Marking up a service page that says nothing useful will not get you quoted. Marking up a page that already answers a real question makes it much easier for Google to attach that answer to your business name.
Which schema types are worth your time
Start with Organization or LocalBusiness on the homepage, with the address written exactly as it appears on your Google Business Profile, plus a sameAs list pointing at every profile you own: Instagram, LinkedIn, Justdial, IndiaMART, Practo if you are a clinic. This is the block that ties your website to the entity Google already holds. Across the 34 Bengaluru sites we reviewed between April and July 2026, only 11 had a sameAs array with more than two entries, and those 11 were three times as likely to have a knowledge panel.
Next is the type that matches what you sell. MedicalClinic and Physician for healthcare, EducationalOrganization and Course for institutes, Restaurant and Menu for food, Service for everything else. Then FAQPage, but only on pages where the questions are visible to a reader. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results for most sites in 2023, so the value now is in answer extraction. Article or BlogPosting on blog posts with a real author and a date rounds it out.
Review schema you wrote about yourself, invented aggregate ratings, and FAQ blocks hidden from users are worse than nothing. Three of the sites in that review had self-applied review markup and all three had lost their rich results by June.
What Bangalore clinics get wrong with schema
Healthcare is where the gap is widest, because the entity is split across the clinic, the doctor, and the hospital where that doctor also consults. A spine practice such as Neospinex or a polyclinic such as Chitra's Lifeline Clinic in Yelahanka has to describe two things: the place, with address and hours, and the practitioner, with credentials and conditions treated. Most clinic sites mark up one and skip the other, so a search engine reads a doctor with no clinic or a clinic with no doctor.
The fix is a Physician block nested inside or referenced from the MedicalClinic block, with the same address string in both, and a medicalSpecialty value that matches the words patients type. A Yelahanka clinic that added a Physician block with consulting hours in March 2026 saw its own domain replace a directory profile as the cited source for a local treatment query within seven weeks. Nothing else on the page changed.
Does the schema have to match the visible page?
Yes, and this is the rule that decides whether the work pays off. Google's guidelines require the marked-up content to be visible to the user, and the chat assistants only benefit from your JSON-LD when the same fact appears in the readable text they extract. If your FAQPage schema lists an answer nobody can see on the page, you have written a file for a machine that has been told to ignore it.
So write the answer in the page copy first, then generate the markup from it. Rahul, who runs a two-chair dental practice in Banashankari, added an FAQ section to his implants page in May 2026 with six questions his front desk was already answering on the phone, then marked it up. He said the useful change was not the ranking, it was that enquiries stopped repeating those six questions.
How to check what you have
Run any page through Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator. Both are free. Then search your own brand name plus a service in ChatGPT and in Google, and see whether the answer comes back with your details or a directory's. That second check takes five minutes and tells you whether the entity work is landing. Our guide to entity SEO for Bangalore businesses covers the layer underneath this, which is how AI engines decide your brand is real in the first place.
Frequently asked questions
Will schema markup improve my rankings?
Not directly. Schema does not carry ranking weight on its own. It makes your page easier to interpret, which affects eligibility for rich results and AI Overview citation, and those bring traffic. Treat it as clarity work rather than a ranking tactic.
How much does it cost to add schema in Bangalore?
For a small site it is usually a few hours of developer work rather than a monthly retainer. Many CMS platforms generate the basics already. The paid part is deciding what the markup should say, which is a content question, not a code question.
Which matters more, schema or reviews?
Reviews, for a local business. A clinic or restaurant with 90 recent reviews and no markup will outperform one with perfect JSON-LD and 12 reviews from 2023. Schema works best on top of signals that already exist.
